Which type of fuel is best? Something we are asked a lot about is whether propane is better than butane.
The answer, as always, is "it depends". It depends on exactly what your trip will involve, where you are going and whether you are hiking or setting up camp in one spot.
The main difference between the two fuels is weight. You may think it's odd to consider weight, as both gases must be quite light, correct?
The difference arises due to way the two fuels are stored. Butane is stored at relatively low pressure, so it only needs a light-weight aluminum canister.

There are also a couple of minor differences between the two;
So, the bottom line is that Butane is better if you are backpacking or hiking, because it is so light. But if you will be camping in one spot, and getting there in your own vehicle, propane is the winner.
How many burners do you need?
It depends on how many people you plan to be cooking for. If you will be camping alone or as a couple, you may be able to get away with a single burner stove.

On the other hand, if you will be cooking for two to four people, or you simply want more flexibility, then a two burner stove will be better.
And for more than four people, a three-burner will be your best option.
Here are a couple of two-burner stoves from Coleman that we like, as they are relatively well-priced and quite compact; they are the Classic Triton Propane Gas Camping Stove, 2-Burner, at $87.99; and the Deluxe Tabletop Propane 2-in-1 Grill/Stove, 2-Burner, at $119.99.
