Mulligan Stew
by Joan
(Michigan)
- Raw hamburger meat
- Seasoning (any that you prefer; we use Lawry seasoning salt)
- Uncooked potatoes, skin on, cut up
- Onion, cut up (usually 1/4-1/2 of onion)
- Carrots, chopped
- Piece of bacon (If you want it crispy, cook it before putting it in the foil packet)
The grease from the bacon and hamburger create wonderful flavors!
Wrap in foil and place over the fire, checking frequently.
That sounds delicious, Joan! Thank you! I have done a similar thing without the bacon. I am going to try it with bacon next time.
I find that it's a good idea to put the onions on the bottom of the packet. If they burn a bit, they will still taste good. Be careful not to burn the potatoes or the meat.
It's important that the meat cooks thoroughly. If you spread it out in a thin layer, it will cook more quickly. Don't just put a big lump of meat in the package. When you think that the meal is ready, check carefully to see that there is no pink beef remaining. If there is, put it back on the fire for a bit.
I used to use Lipton's Onion Soup Mix as the seasoning. It has a nice flavor.
